Downturned Mouth

Our mouths are one of the primary focal points on the face and a key indicator of emotion. When the corners of the mouth downturn or droop, this can cause one to appear sad and angry – when really this is not the case at all. It can also age the face considerably.

The natural aging process plays a significant role in the development of a downturned mouth. Collagen and elastin (the essential building blocks for support and elasticity of our skin) are depleted as we age, resulting in skin becoming thinner and sagging.

As well as this, there’s also a muscle that can affect the corners of the mouth, known as the depressor anguli oris. The muscle group (also responsible for frowning and pouting) depress the corners of the mouth.

Repeated action can also result in marionette lines (the lines that run vertically from the mouth to the chin) and fine lines and wrinkles around the area.

Treatments which can help address this issue include:

  • Dermal fillers
  • Botulinum toxin injections
